Bangkok Thailand, Travel, Tourism
Bangkok is one of Asia's most cosmopolitan cities. Created as the Thai capital in 1782 by the first monarch of the present Chakri dynasty, Bangkok is national treasure house and Thailand's spiritual, cultural, political, commercial, educational and diplomatic centre.

Bangkok exceeds 1,500 square kilometres in area and is home to one-tenth of the country's population.

Major tourist attractions include glittering Buddhist temples, palaces, timeless "Venice of the East" canal and river scenes, classical dance extravaganzas, and numerous shopping centres.
Reminiscence the Old Siam - Rattanakosin Island
Rattanakosin, the old city of Siam, was founded when King Rama I ascended the throne in 1782. With its advantageous strategic geography, the King decided to move the capital city from the west bank of the Chao Phraya River, where the former Thonburi Palace was located, to the eastern side of the river. The benefit of relocating to the eastern bound was to avoiding land erosion and for defense of the peninsula-like land.
The royal city was first named "The City of Rattanakosin Indra Ayodhaya" representing as the King's living palace and the administration center of the Kingdom.

It is generally known as 'Koh Rattanakosin' or 'Rattanakosin Island' because it was surrounded by Chao Phraya River on the west side and inner city moat and canals on the other side.

The existence of the city of Rattanakosin, the replica of the former glorious capital Ayutthaya, become obvious in the Third Reign, as the King commanded the construction and renovation of major temples. Several temples clearly influenced by the Chinese architectural style.

In early Rattanakosin period, residents here were mainly Chinese, Lao, Mon and other minority groups, such as Indians, Khmer, Islamic and Westerner. King Monkut, Rama IV, announced a new foreign policy, making Bangkok an "Open City", allowing Westerners to take up trading posts.

Several major roads were built, notably Charoenkrung (the New Road), Bamrung Muang, Fuang Nakhon and Silom Roads. Commercial centers of various groups of Chinese, Arabs and Europeans were set up, along with new commercial buildings of European and Chinese styles, along the Tanao and Fuang Nakhon Roads, around the Phrayasi and Sao Ching Cha Squares and on the Charoen Krung Road.

The city of Rattanakosin was transformed in to a new era in the Fifth Reign when King Chulalongkorn undertook a major construction of the city after his trip to Europe. The administrative system was modernized, with the creation of ministries and departments. The infrastructure of the city was built, with the expansion of the city further from the river along the roads. The main avenue, Ratchadamnoen, was built, with a network of roads encircling the area.

The city was walled and surrounded by moats, complete with forts. A network of canals surrounded the city, linked to the river and canals. The labyrinth of canals and roads spread out in all directions, with the wholesome Chao Phraya River embracing the city to the West.

The golden era of the city of Rattanakosin, from the First to the Fifth Reigns, left a legacy of spectacular palaces and temples with majestic spires, gliding and decorated with mirrors that glitter in the sun, making the city an unmistakable center of the Kingdom, and the pinnacle of architecture and artistic achievements of the Old Siam.
